On the Trails of Shifting Borders

Imagine waking up one morning to find your house behind a new border, separated from your village by barbed wire. This may happen in South Ossetia, a Russian-occupied part of Georgia. Like Abkhazia, it has been targeted by Russian aggression since the collapse of the Soviet Union. In South Ossetia, Russian forces continue pushing their 'administrative boundary' to expand control.

Starting with the Russian-Georgian war in 2008, Georgian photographer Daro Sulakauri has made the South Ossetian border one of her core projects. She tells of faces and names, of relationships, memories of past life, and thoughts of tomorrow. Her 'Shifting Borders' project, highlights local situations and individual stories. Daro Sulakauri's images point out concrete effects of unilateral power-seeking, an issue of global relevance.

Shifting borders uproot people. Some stay, others flee. Trapped in their own country or refugees, they lose freedom and rights. Let's look at this and commit to a more humane future.
